Old Chum - New Chum
Golden Point, later to be renamed Golden Square, came in to its own when gold was discovered in
1851. It was the location of one of the earliest Victorian Gold rushes and substantial quartz mining.
Our buildings have been named to link with our community’s “Golden” past.
THE OLD CHUM BUILDING
The Old Chum Mine operated in Golden Square. Our original building was built around 1965. For
almost 60 years, our children and families have discovered “gold” within this building in the form of
a joyful and friendly learning community.
THE NEW CHUM BUILDING
The New Chum Mine also operated in Golden Square. The New Chum Railway was also a part of this
mining era. Our kindergarten is located beside a railway track and over the past 5 decades the children
have enjoyed watching trains pass by. The addition of this new building represents the future and our
commitment to providing a secure place of learning and friendship. We believe that children are as
precious as “gold” and with the support of an Early Childhood Education -THE FUTURE IS THEIRS!
Definition of CHUM – “To spend time with someone as a friend”.
In 2022 we named the New Chum building after our retiring Director Carol O’Bree who has worked
in the centre for 33 years and seen the 3 year old kindergarten program get off the ground.
